Louis Moinet Invented the Chronograph in 1816. This Watch Is Their Victory Lap.

Most brands stretch the truth about their history. Louis Moinet does not have to. The champagne 1816 Chronograph is a flex with receipts.

The OG

Every brand wants to claim they were first. First diver. First chronograph. First moon watch. Most of those claims come with asterisks and fine print. Louis Moinet's claim is simple and verifiable: they invented the chronograph in 1816.

A chronograph is a watch with a built-in stopwatch function. You press a button, a hand starts, press again it stops, press a third time it resets. Every sports watch with pushers on the side owes its existence to this invention. And Louis Moinet got there first.

The Champagne Edition

The new 1816 Chronograph in champagne is a celebration in metal and enamel. The dial is a warm gold tone -- not yellow gold flashy, more like the color of late afternoon light. The subdials are recessed and finished with a grainy texture that catches light beautifully.

The case is 41mm in rose gold, which suits the champagne theme perfectly. It is dressy without being stuffy. Think a great suit with sneakers -- formal but self-aware.

The Movement

Inside is an automatic chronograph caliber with a column wheel -- the more refined (and expensive) way to control chronograph functions. Without getting too technical, a column wheel makes the pushers feel smoother and more precise. It is the difference between a mechanical keyboard and a membrane one. Same function, vastly different experience.

The Heritage Play

Louis Moinet has struggled with brand recognition despite having arguably the most significant historical claim in all of watchmaking. They invented an entire complication category. That should put them in every conversation about important watch brands. It usually does not.

This watch is their attempt to change that. Lean into the history. Make it visual. Make it wearable.

The CS Take

The 1816 Chronograph is Louis Moinet's strongest statement in years. It balances heritage with modern wearability and does not feel like a museum piece. If any brand has earned the right to celebrate itself, it is the one that literally invented what most other brands are famous for.
